There are not many unspoilt spots left on the Mediterranean
coastline, whether in Catalonia, Spain or Europe.
Tarragona still has one: the Marquesa woods with their rocky coves,
next to the Platja Llarga, a beach about 2 miles long which, although
it has some buildings dating from the 1960's, still has the charm
and beauty of a natural setting.
A spot where many people come to enjoy the green of the vegetation
and the blue of the sea all year round.
Now the Spanish environment ministry and Tarragona city council,
without ever really putting anything out to tender and without
setting up any multi-disciplinary team to decide what to plan
on this spot, want to build a promenade there, as well as a luxury
housing development with two areas of facilities right next to
the beach.
Is this insensitivity, ignorance or speculation?
GOALS
of this CAMPAIGN:
1. To block the existing plans for the coastline (promenade along
the Platja Llarga and round track through the Marquesa woods)
and the development plans affecting the whole of the surrounding
area.
2.
To preserve this natural area through an environmental plan which
safeguards its value as a landscape and as an ecosystem, without
seriously prejudicing the people who now live and work in the
area.
3. To help to make the PARC NATURAL DE LES TERRES DEL GAIÀ into
a reality,
including the basin of the Gaià river and the green belt to the
east of Tarragona
(with the Mèdol and Mas Enric woods, the Marquesa woods with their
coves and
the Platja Llarga). A green lung for Tarragona to ensure that
the natural, landscape and historic treasures of the area are
preserved.
